Community Resource!
- The Wauconda Area
Community Information Network is a web-based community portal
providing web pages loaded with information and links pertaining
to or of interest to the the communities of Wauconda, Island
Lake, Lake Barrington, Port Barrington, Lakemoor, and Volo,
including unincorporated Wauconda Township. This site
strives to be the most comprehensive web-based information
gateway to these communities. The Wauconda Area includes more
than 22,000 residents and 1,000 businesses and organizations,
and is located about 45 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.

Information Network is hosted on
NorthStarNet, a
web-based information network of Chicago area communities
managed by the North Suburban Library System and more than 50
local libraries representing numerous communities.

- The purpose of the
Community Information Network is threefold:

- Provide a
comprehensive directory of organizations, resources,
services and events in the Wauconda Area or of interest to
the the Wauconda Area community, with links to area websites
and information.
- Provide a
Community Calendar, a web-based
cooperative service that provides Wauconda area residents
with one-click access to local happenings. Its purpose is to
keep everyone with Internet access up-to-date on events and
public meetings being held throughout the community.
- Provide free server
space to Wauconda Area organizations so that they can
develop their own web presence.
- If you belong to an
organization in the Wauconda Area , you can have a presence on
our community's Community Information Network! This
state-of-the-art Community Information Network is visited
thousands of times per each month by people seeking information
about resources and events in the Wauconda Area. Join us
in making sure that these people can find you online.

How can my organization become a participant ("Information Provider")?

What is NorthStarNet and who are Information Providers?
- The Wauconda Area
Community Information Network is part of NorthStarNet.
NorthStarNet
(NSN) is a community resource on the Internet serving the
suburbs north of Chicago. The purpose of NSN is to be a seamless
source of information for the entire north suburban area. NSN
Information Providers are governmental agencies or organizations
in the north suburban area who wish to publish information about
their organizations on the Internet under the auspices of the
North Suburban Library System (NSLS) and their local public
library.

What are the benefits of participation in the NSN project?

- Low cost (free use of
NSN server, inexpensive training classes).
- Visibility on the
World Wide Web.
- Provide current
information about your entity to the community.

What are the first steps?
-
- Information Providers
must be able to meet the standards of the Wauconda Area
Community Information Network Mission Statement and
Information Provider Guidelines
- Print out,
sign, and submit an
Information Provider form
to the
local NSN contact at the Wauconda
Area Library.
- Create a home page.
- Work with the library
coordinator to upload the page.
- Keep information on
your page current.

What is the role of the Public Library?
- The Public Library will
provide information about NSN and make registration forms
available to potential local Information Providers. The NSN
Library Contact will:

- be available to
answer questions from Information Providers about the
content and organization of World Wide Web (WWW) pages;
- work with NSLS to set
up accounts for Information Providers;
- establish links to
Information Provider pages from the Community Information
Network ;
- and will notify
Information Providers if the information on their page is
out-of-date or in some other way not conforming to NSN
guidelines.

What is the role of the North Suburban Library System?
- NSN is operated by NSLS,
with the cooperation of its member academic, public, and school
libraries in northern Cook County, all of Lake County, and parts
of McHenry and Kane Counties. NSLS is one of twelve library
systems funded by yearly grants from the Illinois General
Assembly and the Office of the Secretary of State. NSN utilizes
a computer provided by NSLS. NSLS also provides
technical support and training.

Guidelines for Participants ("Information Providers")
- Wauconda Area Community
Information Network Information Providers are organizations or
groups in the Wauconda Area who wish to contribute information
about their organization to residents of the area. Information
Providers agree to follow all the Wauconda Area Community
Information Network and NorthStarNet policies and guidelines.
The Information Provider is considered the owner of the
information provided and bears all legal responsibility for
whatever information is posted.
The Wauconda Area Community Information Network is maintained by
the Wauconda Area Library as part of the NorthStarNet project of
the North Suburban Library System. Guidelines for the Wauconda
Area Community Information Network have been established by
NorthStarNet and the Wauconda Area Library. Final approval
of Information Providers and the creation of external links to
information sources resides with the Wauconda Area Library.
- In order to contribute
material to the Wauconda Area Community Information Network ,
Information Providers must:

- Be physically located
in the Wauconda Area. This area is defined by the
boundaries of the Wauconda Area Public Library District.
The library
district shares mostly the same boundaries as School
District 118, including all or parts of Wauconda, Island
Lake, Lakemoor, Lake Barrington, Port Barrington, Volo, and
unincorporated Wauconda Township.
Exceptions may be made on
a case by case basis if the organization substantially
contributes to the Wauconda Area community.
- Contribute positively
to the mission of the Wauconda area Community Information
Network.
- A
representative of the organization should submit an
Information Provider Registration Form
to the NorthStarNet contact at the Wauconda Area Library
. Signed applications will be kept on file at the library.
- Be sure to identify
the name of the organization and the person responsible for
maintaining the information on the registration form.
- Create a home page.
Organizations may have a commercial developer, a member of
their organization or a volunteer create their page.
- Each organization's
home page that resides on the NorthStarNet server should
have these standard tags and links somewhere on the page:
- a link back to
the subject page on which the organization is listed,
- a link to the
Community Information Network , and
- a link to
NorthStarNet
- Upload the page to
the NorthStarNet server. Contact the local NorthStarNet
contact for uploading steps.
- Keep information
updated and current. Each organization must designate one
person to be officially responsible for managing and
updating files. Each information file must include the date
the information is loaded in NorthStarNet and provide some
indication of the period of time that the information will
be current.
- Conform to U.S.
copyright law. Copyrighted information may not be posted on
the Network without obtaining proper permission.
- The Wauconda Area
Community Information Network focuses on local and regional
information. Links to external information sources are
permitted if relevant to the Information Provider's basic
mission. Relevancy is determined by NorthStarNet and the
Wauconda Area Library
.
- Adhere to all
other
NorthStarNet policies.
- The Wauconda Area
Library
reserves the right to remove a link to an Information
Provider if the Information Provider is found to have
violated any of the NorthStarNet or the Wauconda Area
Community Information Network policies and guidelines.

Request a link
- If your community
organization or business already has a website you would like to
be included on the Wauconda Area, provide the URL to the
local NorthStarNet contact
at the Wauconda Area Library. The Library may create the link
from the community home page to your organization or business'
website. The Library reserves the right not to link to a site if
the site's content is deemed contrary to the mission of the
Wauconda Area Community Information Network.
- Organizations requesting
a link to their site from the Wauconda Area Community
Information Network should also provide a link back to the
Wauconda Area Community Information Network.
- The Wauconda Area
Community Information Network focuses on local and regional
information.
- The Wauconda Area Library
reserves the right to remove a link from the Wauconda Area
Community Information Network if the website is found to have
violated any of the NorthStarNet or the Wauconda Area Community
Information Network policies and guidelines.
